How to extend your stay in Canada in 2024?

There are many reasons immigrants may need to extend their stay in Canada. If you have undergone the Canada Immigration process as a Visitor or Temporary Resident, and wish to stay longer - you may be eligible to apply for an extension as a visitor.

Extending your stay as a visitor

If you’ve arrived in Canada as a visitor, you would have at least one of these documents:

  • An Electronic Visa Authorization (eTA), or

  • Canada Visitor Visa (also known as a Temporary Resident Visa)

If you need to extend your stay in Canada, you would need to apply for a Visitor Record.

You must apply for a Canada Visitor Record before your current status expires. A majority of Visitor Visas are issued for 6 months. Your status expires 6 months from your date of entry to Canada.

What is a Visitor Record?

A Canada Visitor Record is not exactly a visa. It is a government-issued document that gives you the right to remain in Canada legally. A Visitor Record comes with an expiration date - at which point you must leave the country, or submit another extension to remain in the country.

A Visitor Record does not guarantee a re-entry to Canada.

Extending your stay as a temporary resident

If you are in Canada as a Visitor, Temporary Worker, or Student, you may be eligible to renew your status. To be eligible, you must:

  • Submit your application before the original status expires.

  • Continue to meet the initial requirements of your stay.

  • Abide by all the conditions of your status in Canada.

  • Meet the requirements of the currently applying for an extension through.

How to apply for an extension?

To apply for an extension, you must complete an application package and provide your personal information and supporting documents to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). You can apply through IRCC’s online portal.

If you are immigrating to Canada with your family, they must submit separate applications for an extension.

Generally, you would need to follow these steps:

  • Gather the necessary documents

  • Pay the application processing fee

  • Complete the application form with accurate information and details

  • Sign and date your forms

  • Submit your application to the IRCC.

The process of applying for an extension can sometimes seem like a daunting task - especially for first-timers. Seek guidance from Best Canada immigration consultants in Delhi if you’re having trouble.

How long does the process take?

The current process time to apply for a Visitor Record in Canada is 2 months. Processing times may vary depending on the nature of your case and the application inventory.

What happens next?

If your application is successful, you will receive an immigration document that grants you the status – along with a new expiration date. In case your application is refused/rejected - you can only stay in Canada until the expiration of your current temporary resident status.

You must be physically present in Canada to apply for an extension - even when your application for an extension is being processed. If you leave the country, you will be required to submit a new Canada Immigration application to re-enter Canada.

Good Luck!
